A Village Nursery in the City

The Cottage is the newest setting to be opened by Magdalen Nursery and our third in Earlsfield and Tooting.

We always wanted to create a setting which captured our memories of childhood – small, sweet and simple, and The Cottage is just that! We were offered the opportunity to convert a Victorian Cottage on Garratt Lane into a very small boutique nursery setting. It was a dream come true as we have taken the best elements of our other nurseries and put them together to form cosy, intimate setting, reminiscent of traditional nurseries, with wooden toys and resources, tiny classes and lots of outdoors spaces to explore.

Facilities

Magdalen Nursery, The Cottage is located in a tucked away, secluded, yet very cute Victorian cottage at the edge of Streatham Cemetery on Garratt Lane, near St Georges Hospital, Tooting SW17. It has been carefully restored to create a nursery which reflects traditional settings whilst maintaining modern principles. All rooms have only 6 children per class. Resources and furniture have been specifically designed for the nursery from wood and soft, natural fabrics. Despite it’s small size, the nursery has three beautiful gardens, with natural resources, trees, mud kitchens and toys. The star of the show in the garden is Pickles, the nursery rabbit who hops along with the children, joining in the fun!

Our opening times are from 7.30am to 6.30pm.

We are open Monday to Friday all year round except the Christmas week.

Both full time and part time spaces are available to children aged from 3 months to 5 years.

Fees are all inclusive of nappies, toiletries, snacks, lunches and meals.

Continuing our ethos of connecting with our parents we will have regular “mums mornings” with fresh cakes, teas and sandwiches from our kitchen.

We are a community nursery and our aim is to be at the heart of our local community, a place for parents to meet and a place for children to learn.

We value parents’ involvement in the nursery and their child’s development with us.

Parents are the child’s primary educator and it is essential that they build a strong and close relationship with us – the partnership between home and nursery is paramount to the child’s learning.

We feel an honest and open communication between parents and staff is fundamental for a happy child and healthy school. Parents will be able to monitor their child’s progress through their developmental profile, which is available to them at all times.

Magdalen Nursery prides itself on its commitment to health and nutrition.

Our excellent in-house chef creates a weekly seasonal menu which provides a balanced diet for our children. This will always contain plenty of fresh vegetables, meats and fruit. We pay due attention to every child’s dietary requirements and any allergies.

We believe that establishing healthy habits is essential in early life and our varied menu reflects this. Equally, we believe in broadening our children’s minds and introduce different tasty foods from around the world to them through the week.

Parents are kept informed of what their children eat with menus and samples. Our fees include breakfast, which is served between 8am to 8.30am, mid-morning snacks and milk, a healthy hot lunch and afternoon tea.

Magdalen Nursery has very strict staff recruitment processes. We are very meticulous in selecting only the best candidates for each position.

After being shortlisted, candidates are thoroughly checked and vetted. Only after completing an intensive induction programme are they finally hired.  Our recruitment policies and processes are quite extensive and available to view in our office.

Our staff are some of the best in the market – each member has formal qualifications in Childcare or teaching. Regardless of our facilities, we are very aware that it is our staff which makes us stand out – and it is with this in mind that we can confidently say our staff are second to none.

We are extremely proud of our excellent facilities at Magdalen Nursery. We have the best quality fittings and furniture with the highest safety ratings.

All tables and chairs are wooden and robust. Our toys are easily accessible by our children and cleaned daily to maintain hygiene standards.

We have an excellent CCTV system within our nursery for maintaining our strict safety guidelines. It is constantly monitored on a large screen in the managers’ office.

We promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging our children to be physically active and enjoying the outdoors. We have a fantastic, natural and secure gardens which are dedicated to our children. They have a variety of play equipment and toys and are a very special place in our nurseries.

Every day at Magdalen Nursery is a mixture of child–led and adult directed activities with a curriculum based around learning through play. Our fun and stimulating environment allows children to embrace their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for life. We believe that by providing a platform that supports children to discover and experiment, they will learn.

Throughout the day there are a variety of activities including messy play, drama, painting, baking and books. We have a lovely vegetable patch specifically for the children – every week they will spend time in our garden learning about fruit and vegetables, growing them and finally enjoying eating them! We aim to nurture creativity through music and movement, art and design. Time will be spent on maths and literacy games as well as exposure to computers and IT.

Magdalen Nursery is a registered early years provider and as such we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The 7 key areas of learning in the EYFS are:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Communication and Language • Literacy • Mathematical Development • Knowledge and understanding of the World • Physical Development • Expressive arts and design

Children experiment, discover and learn in our creative, inspiring environments. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and its 7 key principles, our aim is to develop and teach children to become engaged learners. Each key learning area of the EYFS is explored to prepare them for the future – to help them become bright, alert and well-rounded children. We learn through play, but learn fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, tolerance, respect and love for one another.

It is our goal to provide each child with a personal programme for development and learning.

Every child is treated as an individual and encouraged to learn at his or her own pace. Through careful observation and analysis, we document our children’s profiles and guide their development personally. This is structured through online portals which are accessible
to parents throughout the day. We explore our children’s individual interests and build on their existing knowledge, thereby teaching in a way that is both meaningful and interesting to each child.
