THE GROVE

St George’s Grove is our second nursery,  built in early 2016. It has been rated OUTSTANDING IN ALL AREAS by Ofsted in 2018 and is one of the most coveted nurseries in Wandsworth.

A bespoke nursery for Earlsfield

Four years after The Lodge being in operation, we realised the need to open a new setting locally to accommodate the families on our waiting list. Our reputation as a high quality, family focussed childcare provider had grown to such an extent that we were being approached by various Authorities including the Council and NHS to create a new setting within Earlsfield.

After an extensive search for suitable sites we were delighted to find The Grove, a purpose built site on the edge of Earlsfield and Tooting. This was the perfect opportunity for us to use our years of experience to create a tailor made nursery setting, fulfilling all of our aspirations and inspirations for the perfect Early Years setting. Using a team of architects, all the senior staff at Magdalen Nursery came together to lay down a blueprint for our new nursery – an open plan design promoting free exploration and activity, whilst still maintaining our small group sizes.

Facilities

The nursery has to be seen to be believed. It is designed 100% with a child’s perspective, encompassing contemporary design with state of the art childcare. The nursery is decorated with lots of raw materials, such as concrete, steel and wood, replete with textures and colours to stimulate children’s senses through out the day. Children have free access to three wonderful gardens which all represent the seven areas of learning. Whilst the setting is at first glance “open plan”, it is separated by different age groups who all stay together through their day.

Small Groups – Big Fun!

One of the key qualities we wanted to maintain was our small groups. We believe that children learn and develop much better in a more focussed and attentive smaller group, as a result children are placed in “classes” of 6 to 8 children with 2 carers or teachers. There are separate areas for Art, Numeracy and Literature – our library is a particular haven for all age groups! We wanted to create a nursery unlike any other, and this can be seen across the setting. We have sunken sand pits for the children to play in, a dedicated “Construction Room” in which a lego wall is the centre piece. In fact, we have even gone so far as to to create a Disco Room, which comes complete with disco lights, mirror balls and a sound system! This room is used mainly for Dance, Drama and Music, led by our music teacher Suzy. The Grove even has a purpose built, fully functioning Cookery School in which our children have cooking classes with our Nursery Chef.

Let’s Eat!

Much like the Lodge, all food is freshly prepared on site by our wonderful chef, Maria. She makes great use of our fully fitted commercial kitchen, producing delicious home cooked food and snacks. We follow the same seasonal rotating menu as the Lodge, ensuring our children are receiving a balanced nutritious diet.

We are open Monday to Friday all year round except the Christmas week.

Both full time and part time spaces are available to children aged from 3 months to 5 years.

Fees are all inclusive of nappies, toiletries, snacks, lunches and meals.

Continuing our ethos of connecting with our parents we will have regular “mums mornings” with fresh cakes, teas and sandwiches from our kitchen.

We are a community nursery and our aim is to be at the heart of our local community, a place for parents to meet and a place for children to learn.

We value parents’ involvement in the nursery and their child’s development with us.

Parents are the child’s primary educator and it is essential that they build a strong and close relationship with us – the partnership between home and nursery is paramount to the child’s learning.

We feel an honest and open communication between parents and staff is fundamental for a happy child and healthy school. Parents will be able to monitor their child’s progress through their developmental profile, which is available to them at all times.

Magdalen Nursery prides itself on its commitment to health and nutrition.

Our excellent in-house chef creates a weekly seasonal menu which provides a balanced diet for our children. This will always contain plenty of fresh vegetables, meats and fruit. We pay due attention to every child’s dietary requirements and any allergies.

We believe that establishing healthy habits is essential in early life and our varied menu reflects this. Equally, we believe in broadening our children’s minds and introduce different tasty foods from around the world to them through the week.

Parents are kept informed of what their children eat with menus and samples. Our fees include breakfast, which is served between 8am to 8.30am, mid-morning snacks and milk, a healthy hot lunch and afternoon tea.

Magdalen Nursery has very strict staff recruitment processes. We are very meticulous in selecting only the best candidates for each position.

After being shortlisted, candidates are thoroughly checked and vetted. Only after completing an intensive induction programme are they finally hired.  Our recruitment policies and processes are quite extensive and available to view in our office.

Our staff are some of the best in the market – each member has formal qualifications in Childcare or teaching. Regardless of our facilities, we are very aware that it is our staff which makes us stand out – and it is with this in mind that we can confidently say our staff are second to none.

We are extremely proud of our excellent facilities at Magdalen Nursery. We have the best quality fittings and furniture with the highest safety ratings.

All tables and chairs are wooden and robust. Our toys are easily accessible by our children and cleaned daily to maintain hygiene standards.

We have an excellent CCTV system within our nursery for maintaining our strict safety guidelines. It is constantly monitored on a large screen in the managers’ office.

We promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging our children to be physically active and enjoying the outdoors. We have a fantastic, natural and secure gardens which are dedicated to our children. They have a variety of play equipment and toys and are a very special place in our nurseries.

Every day at Magdalen Nursery is a mixture of child–led and adult directed activities with a curriculum based around learning through play. Our fun and stimulating environment allows children to embrace their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for life. We believe that by providing a platform that supports children to discover and experiment, they will learn.

Throughout the day there are a variety of activities including messy play, drama, painting, baking and books. We have a lovely vegetable patch specifically for the children – every week they will spend time in our garden learning about fruit and vegetables, growing them and finally enjoying eating them! We aim to nurture creativity through music and movement, art and design. Time will be spent on maths and literacy games as well as exposure to computers and IT.

Magdalen Nursery is a registered early years provider and as such we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The 7 key areas of learning in the EYFS are:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Communication and Language • Literacy • Mathematical Development • Knowledge and understanding of the World • Physical Development • Expressive arts and design

Children experiment, discover and learn in our creative, inspiring environments. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and its 7 key principles, our aim is to develop and teach children to become engaged learners. Each key learning area of the EYFS is explored to prepare them for the future – to help them become bright, alert and well-rounded children. We learn through play, but learn fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, tolerance, respect and love for one another.

It is our goal to provide each child with a personal programme for development and learning.

Every child is treated as an individual and encouraged to learn at his or her own pace. Through careful observation and analysis, we document our children’s profiles and guide their development personally. This is structured through online portals which are accessible
to parents throughout the day. We explore our children’s individual interests and build on their existing knowledge, thereby teaching in a way that is both meaningful and interesting to each child.
